The crops at White Cedar Farm are never sprayed with herbicides, pesticides or fungicides. This is a rarity in an industry where margins are small and the pressure to grow as much as you can in the limited growing season is huge. Owned and farmed by Dave and Shelley Smith and Liz Schneider, White Cedar produces vegetables, cage-free, antibiotic-free eggs, and pasture raised, no hormone bacon, sausage, and lamb.
The trio’s philosophy is “keep it clean and wholesome.” They care deeply about the health and treatment of their animals, and they don’t put anything on their crops that they wouldn’t want their children eating or touching. This means extra work, creativity and diligence (as well as squashing more than a few bugs), but for these farmers and their customers, it is worth it. All three partners agree that farming demands long, hard hours, and making ends meet is always a challenge – but asked if they could see themselves doing any other kind of work, they say “no.” This is what they love – most of the time. White Cedar’s products are available through their CSA, their farmstand, farm markets and Eastman’s Corner. whitecedarfarm.com
